Katz Teller Trio Awarded "Lawyer of the Year" Honors for 2016

CINCINNATI – Katz Teller attorneys Andrew R. Berger, Joel S. Brant and Stephen C. Kisling were recently selected by their peers as a Cincinnati “Lawyer of the Year” in Woodward/White's The Best Lawyers in America© 2016 (Copyright 2015 by Woodward/White, Inc., of Aiken, S.C.)  Each of the above attorneys were selected in the following categories:

  • Andy Berger – Corporate Law, Cincinnati
  • Jody Brant – Tax Law, Cincinnati
  • Steve Kisling – Employee Benefits (ERISA) Law, Cincinnati

Andy Berger’s ability to grasp the big picture while minding the details allows him to tackle incredibly complex transactions and achieve order and structure at macro and micro levels.  As anyone who has been through a merger or acquisition knows, they are major events that create wide-ranging issues, entail significant negotiation and generate reams of paper or digital documents for review.  In both general corporate and health care transactions such as these, Andy brings thoroughness, care and attention to detail balanced with creative, but practical, business strategies and advice.  In addition to his corporate board involvement in the non-profit sector and active participation in the local Jewish community, Andy is a long-time member of the firm’s Board of Directors.

For Jody Brant’s taxation practice, which concerns corporate and partnership taxation, individual income taxation, state and local tax matters, gift and estate tax, and non-profit tax-exemption matters, taking the time to listen to every issue before rushing into action allows him to structure transactions efficiently, minimizing negative tax consequences and capitalizing on potential tax benefits.  He is involved in several leadership roles at the firm, including as a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and its benefits, finance, marketing, retirement plan and strategic planning committees.

While it is a generalization, but no great secret, that many lawyers run a little hot-blooded, Steve Kisling is calm, patient and always composed.  He knows that business owners, benefits professionals and human resources personnel have multiple balls in the air at any given time, and he enjoys relieving some of the strain and worry that comes with the administration of benefit plans. But there is much more to Steve than just a pleasant demeanor.  Steve has more than 30 years’ experience in tax and planning matters, from both the public sector enforcement and guidance perspective and the private sector creation and compliance perspective.  He is a frequent lecturer on issues concerning benefits and general tax matters and has served as chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Cincinnati Bar Association.  At Katz Teller, Steve is the chair of the firm’s benefits committee and a member of the firm’s administrative and retirement plan committees.

Andy, Jody and Steve have been pillars of the firm and leaders in their respective practices for years, and their service and skill are certainly worthy of notice.
